2 months ago, my family and I drove from Saskatchewan to coastal BC. A few weeks later, we flew to Aotearoa New Zealand. Today we're flying from Christchurch to Invercargill. Tomorrow we're taking a ferry from Bluff to Rakiura Stewart Island.

This will be a trip within a trip within a trip within a trip. Wish me luck! #ProfSamLectureTour

Beatrice Hill Tinsley Lecture: Astronomy vs. the Billionaire Space Race

Join internationally recognised astronomer Dr. Samantha Lawler for a fascinating public talk exploring what happens when modern space ambition meets the realities of physics — and the fallout can land closer to home than you’d think. In Astronomy vs. the Billionaire Space Race, Dr. Lawler shares extraordinary real-world stories of space debris turning up on farmland near her home in Saskatchewan, Canada — including what it’s like when silent SpaceX representatives arrive in a rented truck, only to be met by an astronomer and local journalists. Along the way, you'll hear what the rapid rise of private satellite launches means for: International law and responsibility The future operation of satellites in Low Earth Orbit Atmospheric pollution And the long-term future of astronomy and dark skies This event is part of the Beatrice Hill Tinsley Lecture Tour, celebrating the life and legacy of groundbreaking New Zealand astronomer Beatrice Hill Tinsley (1941–1981), whose work transformed how we understand galaxies and an evolving universe. About the speaker Dr. Samantha Lawler is a professor of astronomy at the University of Regina (Canada). Her work on the Kuiper Belt and satellite pollution has been featured widely in international media. Presented by / organiser RASNZ Lecture Trust Hosted by Stewart Island Promotion Association

Will I be able to wake up, get family out the door, make it to the ferry terminal, find wifi access, log in to an important zoom meeting, convince important people at the meeting to submit a comment to the FCC (that I and a collaborator wrote for them), and check in for the ferry by 9:15am? Tomorrow morning is going to be... exciting. #ProfSamLectureTour

On the plus side, the Portuguese translation of the Conversation article I co-authored last week about Kessler Syndrome (my part) and space policy (Gregory Radisic's part) has half a million reads(!!) so that's cool.
https://theconversation.com/too-many-satellites-earths-orbit-is-on-track-for-a-catastrophe-but-we-can-stop-it-275430

And hopefully there will be another Conversation article I co-authored in the last 5 days out tomorrow! Learn more ways why launching a million satellites is a terrible awful stupid idea!

@sundogplanets Rakiura is one of my favourite places in NZ. I'm one of the rare few who has done the stunning Southern Circuit, it was a memorable experience, including my only daylight encounter with a Kiwi.
