Is there a way for one to dip their toe into freelance software dev without taking the full plunge of setting up a whole business around it? I have been thinking a lot about it lately but want to try it on for size if possible

@farrisswisher what country are you based in? Has a slight bearing. (My experience is UK)

@farrisswisher well, I can't speak to the US law, but I suspect this is universally true. The hardest part of being a freelance software dev _is_ the "running a company" part.
In the UK, although we have simple company formations called "sole traders" I'm pretty sure anyone would struggle to get a contract setup like that. The US may be different.
Your route to freelance depends on what you want out of it...

@farrisswisher If it's variety, and work with lots of different clients, perhaps try working for an agency or consultancy for a while. Gives you the chance to build up a network and speak to other freelancers (agencies often make use of a roster of freelance staff)
However, if your motivation is setting your own hours, then I suspect you need to bite the bullet and set up a company.
Last thought, umbrella companies are becoming more common in the UK. Might that be an option in the US?

@toychicken not sure I know what an umbrella company is tbh, but I will look into it. Thanks for your insight into the matter! As far as goals I think my ultimate goal is just to be my own boss, variety maybe a secondary goal once there actually is a business with clients

@farrisswisher I think the US equivalent is something like a Contractor of Record or Employer of Record. Basically a company that does all the boring company stuff for you, like tax and payroll.
