I don't think they'd do a 2D remake. This is definitely one that would mostly just get people complaining that the new art doesn't look right and etc. Or, worse, that it's just badly resized.

I keep thinking of that fan project to make a 3D version of the game way back when that they C&Ded so fast (but not until they'd released some remixed music that was meant to be the soundtrack and some screenshots.) Chrono Trigger can make the transition (whether for better or for worse I don't know, but it would definitely fully function) and I think the way they've done some of the Dragon Quest games recently kind of tells us the direction they are leaning just as a whole right now. Though I don't know about that art style fitting CT so well...
