There's no way much of that tariff money can be recovered. Many shippers for example raised their prices very significantly to cover duty/tariff charges from their end so that recipients didn't have to worry about them. Even if those shippers eventually see some sort of refund of those duty/tariff payments it's very unlikely the buyers will ever see any part of them. So U.S. buyers got screwed and are staying screwed.

@lauren Hmm. I can't say you're wrong, but I would have assumed Customs would have collected those taxes and turned them over to the Treasury. So it seems the illegal tariffs should be 100% refundable.

But that would be a world where billionaires aren't in charge...

So wait, are you telling me a botched government policy imposed unilaterally by a Republican president accidentally redistributed wealth from the poor to the rich‽

Exactly. The pricing structure has been altered, and there is no going back.

I heard that #Costco is trying to clawback some money. Since it has a membership structure, would that money find its way back to members?

@steve_zeke In detail? Probably not. Maybe they'd have some sort of store wide sale for a time saying it's a "tariff sale" or something, but customers trying to claw back specific amounts seems like a tough slog. Who knows ...

Was thinking more of a rebate or dividend (they already pay that for executive members) or just deduction for annual membership fee?

@steve_zeke Some sort of one-time annual fee reduction might make sense, but wouldn't amount to much in terms of dollars per individual.

@lauren we COULD confiscate the wealth of the ruling crime family and redistribute as refund.

@lauren price increases are never rescinded. That's true. First they raised prices during COVID, now the Tariffs. But don't raise the minimum wage, oh F no. <sarcasm>
