I hate letter grading with a passion.

I have no less than 7 students in the same class who final grades are between 79 and 81% And depending on how I adjust (because it's a presentation class where grades can't be 100% objective depending on how hard I try) all of these students can have either a A or a B. I even have two students, who are good friends with a 79.4 and a 79.5 which means one should have a B and the other one a A.

This is all so very stupid. Why can't grades be plain numbers?

@SRDas Definitely not. This is how you end up with grade inflation.

@David In my university, grades were percentages, at least in engineering. Simple, logical, easy to use.

@mpjgregoire Grades are percentages, but then I need to turn them into letters, which is so stupid.

I blame US influence, very probably.

@David Don't US universities use GPAs?

@mpjgregoire Yes, but they just assign a value to the grade letters.

@David So they take an 81%, call it a C+, then say that's a GPA of 4.2 — something like that? Bizarre.

@mpjgregoire Basically. I mean, when is the last time the US made sense with numbers, measurements and such???

The part that sucks is that Japan has imported this system. But the GPA doesn't matter, except for some majors... Actually, I haven't turned in the grades of this class yet. I need to see if their GPA matters or not (if it doesn't I won't have to worry so much about whether those grades are a A or a B)
