heyyyy just found two mechanical engineers talking about how they're trying hard to find out how to use fucking chatbots for fucking mechanical engineering of real shit

extremely worried they'll be left behind it's the future you know

we can only hope they never get as far as applying it

@davidgerard I called her out and she's like "I'm not using it to make engineering decisions, just to make the tools I use to make engineering decisions" which I don't see how she thinks it's any better

@davidgerard

there's a post at the end of the chain that the account holder specifically lists functional problems with using AI and the "solution" to this is assuming they're not good enough at prompting the AI.

AI is the Victor Lustig Rumanian Box scam. the second part of the scam was marks who didn't wait the 18 hours to use it again and thought they'd broken it so they buy another one. except Victor made money. AI companies are massively in the red. not a single one is making profit

@coolcalmcollected @davidgerard

Agreed to every point.

There is another item i struggle to get my head around.

The "left behind" fear

My impression is that there is no first mover advantage

Not on a company side and neither individually

Examples for companies. IBM invented the PC but ... Apple might have invented the smartphone but the Android market is bigger. And Microsoft is maybe the best example of repeatedly coming late and later dominating the market

As long as you don't keep bearing a dead horse you will be ok

And to me it feels like that "AI" (LLMs) is the dead horse if you use it for other things than as a glorious auto complete

@realn2s @coolcalmcollected @davidgerard

My former employer would have us do phishing training every year; and they are pushing AI hard as well.

In the phishing training they say that a sign of a scam is trying to create a false sense of urgency. Then when they talk about AI, they say you might get "left behind."

@EFreethought @coolcalmcollected @davidgerard

That would a good explanation.

I emphasise "urgency" it in social engineering trainings as well 🙂

@davidgerard Immediately made me think of this (real live human!) artist's photorealistic 3d renderings of friends' and strangers' attempts to draw bicycles: https://www.gianlucagimini.it/portfolio-item/velocipedia/

@davidgerard Banned. Banned for life from building anything more complex than a baby block tower.
