Fun fact to keep you awake tonight: Just had a chat with an atmospheric chemist and the best comparison she could come up with for the pollution that would result from burning up 1 million "AI datacenter" satellites in Earth's atmosphere is a nuclear war.

@sundogplanets

I must be behind on the bad news of the day again -- is somebody planning to launch servers into orbit? How would that make any sense at all?

@sundogplanets I hope that this is also one of Elon's many fairy tales, a honey trap, just to attract investors.

@sundogplanets what happens, when they stay at a Lagrange point and are dumped on the moon at the end of their lifetime? Would the created dust cause problems?

@sundogplanets wait! Wait!

Is this secretly a geo-engineering plan to reduce global temperatures by Stratospheric Aerosol Injection?!

Have we all been horribly wrong about Elon all this time?

@sundogplanets There are so many ways the concept doesn't make sense. I've worked in data centers and computer labs for several years. They require continuous maintenance. Every day multiple components fail and must be replaced.

If they could make server systems more robust, why wouldn't they already be doing that on Earth, saving billions on parts and labor?

Too many satellites? Earth’s orbit is on track for a catastrophe – but we can stop it

Cultural, spiritual, and most environmental impacts aren’t taken into account when launching thousands of satellites.

@sundogplanets Well, they are rockets so that makes sense.

Is the primary concern with nuclear pollution not the radioactive contaminants? Do satellites acquired induced radioactivity over their useful life on top of that?

@sundogplanets the scary part imho is all the people who are in a position to accept the implied valuation of these "AI datacentres" and effectively create funny money out of thin air.
I think Elon would put those datacentres up there IF he could, despite consequences. I also think he knows he can't, but need to keep the party going and so... this.

@sundogplanets Is it possible that behind closed doors, Musk et al think Kessler syndrome will reverse climate change? Is that the level of myopic stupidity we could be dealing with here?

I mean, the Epstein class do seem to sincerely believe that technology will somehow save *them*, even if billions of the rest of us are wiped out in the process. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@sundogplanets If they want to put a server farm in orbit, how about at the L4 or L5 Lagrange points for the Earth-Moon system? They'd be in direct sunlight most of the time, reducing the need for batteries. Less impact on telescopes as well.

For Elon's LLM, let's put it at L3 (Earth/Sun system), which would have some real benefits for the rest of us: with the sun in the way, it would be hard to "talk" to it.

@sundogplanets nearly 10 years ago “we have had enough of experts” today, it has completely come true. The experts are almost totally sidelined.

@sundogplanets considering the mass of material transported to atmosphere by under- and above-ground nuclear tests, that seems to be off by a couple of orders of magnitude.

@sundogplanets @paul_ipv6 I really don't believe this stupid plan is ever going to happen.

Even if they can launch 1000 sats a week, it'll take 20 years (if none fall down). And that's not even taking into consideration the resources needed to build them.

It's more Elon bluster, and just a way for him to get money out of gullible investors. Think Theranos.

There is (unfortunately) plenty of credible schemes to fight.
