I like that the Forkiverse exists and that it is part of the Fediverse.

Another Fediverse culture. Another set of norms. Another group of people.

It makes the Fediverse a better and richer place.

@fedinaut

I talked about it before in this thread:
https://mastodon.social/@reiver/114421698141076701

But —

The Fediverse doesn't have a single culture. It has many cultures.

The Fediverse doesn't even have a single mass-culture.

Different parts of the Fediverse and different groups of people on the Fediverse have different cultures — different social norms, different traditions, different (cultural) expectations, etc.

@reiver I understand your point. But it doesn't say anything about what that different culture is supposed to be like and how you define it.

@fedinaut

I can give you a more concrete example — quote-boosts.

One of the first culture clashes I recall regarding it was when Black-Twitter tried to move the the Fediverse.

A lot of people who were part of Black-Twitter were used to quote-boosts. They had a culture war with a very, very, very small fraction of (less-than 0.002%) of the Fediverse.

(Most of Black-Twitter seemed to leave the Fediverse and form BlackSky.)

Also ...

@fedinaut

Misskey (and its forks) and Akkoma/Pleroma (and its forks) have had quote-boosts for years. (Much before Mastodon.)

Much later, Mastodon adds quote-boosts. But makes them work differently. Makes them permissioned.

(Misskey, Akkoma/Pleroma, and forks quote-boosts are NOT permissioned.)

That causes a different mass-culture.

@reiver

do the different norms/culture persist after somebody has started interacting with lots of people on other servers?

I guess every platform so far develops a bit of a culture based on lots of things, but in wanting to be universal, I worry about cultures here keeping anyone away. but maybe the goal should be to have every culture (obviously technically impossible) and help people find theirs. but also not put up walls. IDK.

@wjmaggos

Regarding:
"do the different norms/culture persist after somebody has started interacting with lots of people on other servers?"

To me it looks like different cultures have persisted on the Fediverse.

(Although some have felt unwelcomed and left. Ex: Black-Twitter, Bitcoin-Fedi, etc.)
