I find it curious when people are surprised by racism, homophobia, and other forms of hate on social media, even on platforms that don't rely on them to grow.

We are still dealing with the society we have, and many people are capable of learning and changing. Civil dialogue is one of the most powerful tools we have for addressing disagreement and conflict.

If we give up on empathy and refuse to engage with perspectives that shock us, what purpose does social media serve as a space for connection?

This doesn't mean tolerating intolerance. It means making an effort to reach those who are open to reflection and growth. After all, who among us has never changed their mind?

@everton137 Some ppl are unlikely to start thinking due to long habit, but we have to keep dropping truth bombs to inform all who may be listening.

@everton137 very well! I have no counterargument so I accept responsibility to start doing my part.

I have been shirking that one completely but you've caught me out there because I fully agree, so now my behaviour has got to change to align with the principle.

no more insta-blocking by me! I will instead offer a principled perspective politely in good faith hoping it will be used, and will only block folks who don't want to engage. (at least I think that's the change I need.)
