RE: https://phpc.social/@preinheimer/116081169786071628

It's gonna be super fun to see the "market" react to AI companies introducing "surge pricing" for compute: Oh, you need to get this project done till Friday and all your staff is just vibecoding? Token price is now 5 times the normal amount.

@tante I suppose in the end it will be similar to CapEx vs. OpEx, which was the “promised land” 10 years ago for “Cloud". And nowadays, people realize that the promised land wasn't about saving money for them.

@tante

AI companies are welcome to "surge price" themselves silly...

Woe unto the foolish companies that buy into the hype.

Won't make their "product" any more worthwhile/viable and certainly won't make their "profit" bigger than their expenditure...

It's all just marketing hype designed to extract as much grift as possible.

🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️🫏🫏🤡🤡💩💩

@tante That's the fun part that all the CEOs who currently push their companies into becoming "AI-first" don't seem to see.. all AI access currently is almost free or under special introductory pricing.. if OpenAI et al really want to make those 10B$+ per year in profits that they desperately need to so their finance commitments don't go up in flames, pricing for the end user needs to become *a lot* more expensive and most likely prohibitively so for most companies and projects.

@tante oh, nevermind - the change of subscription plans is just to ensure the highest quality of service. It works best if you purchase “Team” subscription at 2k/user/month. You most likely will not want the “Basic” tier where you are limited to 10 prompts a day.

This is exactly what AWS Spot pricing is but in reverse. It's been around since 2009 and lets you buy spare capacity at a discount.

@ianthetechie It’s wild that people continue with that as if entshittification is not a thing.

It’s like something stops to work in our brain if something is free or cheap.

@tante They are probably training ML models to identify looming deadlines. They are likely analyzing all of those email summaries and calendars. A sudden surge in use can signal a looming deadline, and so on.

They are already sort of doing it by throttling use. The next step is to add s price to it

Good luck if the code doesn’t work.

Arguing with the bot to get a systemic problem fix is going to be very interesting

@tante that assumes a monopoly or high barrier to entry; if a competitor can come in and offer a slightly lower price, they will do it. This is the time to ensure there are successful rivals everywhere. I suppose supportuling Mistral, Alibaba, etc. at an enterprise level would ensure this.

@tante They will wait until the Elves leave Middle Earth and companies don't have anyone skilled in removing digital asbestos. Then the entire economy will be in thrall to the Epstein Class and the huge nuclear fires of Mordor powering the tensor forges they use to bind us all.

@tante it's not like your vendor is going to have moment-to-moment intel on your business in order to precisely extract every penny of market surplus from you, until they finally decide that you're better off being run into the ground and scooped up in a fire sale.

They would never dream of doing that

@tante Especially as currently the price is lower because of the venture captial in the market. Once the successful companies need to make back the expenses, it will cost so much more even as the base price.

That companies make themselves reliant on an expendable resources (once a token is used, it is gone, no matter if the outcome is satisfactory) versus a fixed price employee is so myopic to me.

@tante once the price catches up there won’t be as many experienced people to keep salaries down if they decide to go back to human developers either.

@tante @Nicovel0 @preinheimer I don't think the ‘market' has yet understood if it fires swathes of staff to save their salaries ‘because AI can do their jobs’, they are evermore hostages to the future AI pricing model.

Which is only going to go one way.
