AI screaming, void screaming, allcaps, long,

EVEN IF THE CODE WORKED IT WOULD STILL BE ETHICALLY REPREHENSIBLE TO PARTICIPATE UNCRITICALLY IN THE LARGEST THEFT AND CONCENTRATION OF POWER THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN. SURE WE CAN TALK ABOUT SHADES OF GRAY, ACCESSIBILITY, DIFFERENT MODES AND QUANTITIES OF USE, ACTIVE LEARNING, AND WHATEVER. SURE THE WORLD IS MORE SUBTLE THAN AN ALLCAPS MICROBLOG POST. IM NOT TALKING ABOUT AMATEURS VIBE CODING A GAME FOR THEM AND THEIR FRIENDS. YOU KNOW WHAT IM TALKING ABOUT. THE MAXIMALISTS THAT ARE SAYING CODING IS JOEVER AND THROWING HUNDREDS OF VIBE CODED SAAS PLATFORMS AT THE WALL TO SEE WHAT STICKS AND OVERBURDENING THE VOLUNTEER LABOR OF WHAT WAS ALREADY A NOT SO HEALTHY OPEN SOURCE SOCIAL STRUCTURE AND MUDDYING THE WATER WITH POLLUTION, FIGURATIVELY AND LITERALLY.

BUT THE CODE DOESNT FUCKING WORK, IT FUCKING SUCKS

@jonny Not sure if you want an answer on why shitheads love AI:

It's not about software that works well, or even works at all.

It's about having a product that can be produced at low cost and sold at ridiculously high margins, and competitors will have a hard time to explain why people should pay more.

Yes, the obvious reason is "to have a working product", but people are conditioned to an "its shit anyway so why should I pay more" attitude by now.

AI screaming, void screaming, allcaps, long,

I DONT GATEKEEP SHIT. I TEACH ANYONE WHO COMES INTO CONTACT WITH ME ANYTHING THEY WANT TO KNOW ABOUT COMPUTERS. I HAVE BROUGHT UP NEW PROGRAMMERS IN EVERY CONTEXT I HAVE WORKED IN SINCE I WAS A PROGRAMMER. I SPEND LARGE QUANTITIES OF MY TIME VOLUNTEERING WITH GROUPS TO TEACH PROGRAMMING AND IMPROVE QUALITY OF AND ACCESS TO FREE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES. EVERYTHING I WRITE IS FREE AND I BEND OVER BACKWARDS AND CODESIGN WITH NONEXPERTS SO THAT IT CAN BE USED BY NONEXPERTS. I HAVE READ WORSE CODE THAN MOST PEOPLE HAVE EVER WRITTEN AND HELPED THE AUTHOR FIX IT WITHOUT BATTING AN EYE. I HAVE NO PROBLEM WITH AMATEURS USING LLMS TO LEARN OR MAKE THINGS FOR THEMSELVES, EVEN IF IT MAKES ME SAD BECAUSE IT'S AT BEST A DEAD END WHERE THEY WILL LOSE ACCESS TO THE EMPOWERING NATURE OF CODE WHEN THE VC MONEY DRIES UP, RATHER THAN GAINING LIFELONG SKILLS. IN FACT I LOVE TO SEE NEW PROGRAMMERS EXCITED ABOUT BEING ABLE TO ACCESS SOMETHING THEY PREVIOUSLY COULDN'T. THAT ROCKS AND THE EXCLUSIONARY DESIGN OF MOST FOSS, EVEN IF UNINTENTIONAL, FUCKING SUCKS. BAD CODE IS NOT THE PROBLEM. AMATEURS ARE NOT THE PROBLEM. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THE PEOPLE WITH THE MOST EXPERTISE AND THE MOST MONEY IN THE WORLD ARE PROMULGATING A CULT OF MAKING EVERYTHING FUCKING SUCK MORE SO THEY CAN MAKE MORE MONEY THAN GOD. THINGS FUCKING SUCKING HAS CONSEQUENCES AND ISNT JUST ANNOYING. THE SAME CULT THAT MANAGED TO SOMEHOW MAKE OUTLOOK EVEN WORSE IS TAKING OVER THE CODE THAT ADMINISTERS PUBLIC BENEFITS, MEDICINE AND INSURANCE. THAT PEOPLE SAY OPPOSING VIBE CODING IS GATEKEEPING IS MADDENING WHEN THE POWER STRUCTURE THAT DRIVES VIBE CODING IS TRYING TO BECOME THE GATEKEEPER OF LIFE ITSELF

@jonny Strategy, marketing, PR and branding people hired by rich fascists are very good at weaponizing good things (like being on the watch out for gatekeeping) against progressives.

Similarly, some assholes claim that being against the AI boondoggle is being "against accessibility" simply because corps that have routinely not given a shit about accessibility in their products, hiring, or workplaces have pretended to be all about #a11y uses for AI.

@jonny the industry seems to have, via flocking behaviour rather than actual thought, identified that currently having a working product is secondary to just flooding (and preferably controlling) the market.

And we’re sat here watching the mice dance around the mouse trap singing songs about how wonderful life will be when everyone finally accepts the free cheese into their hearts.

@jonny sigh.

My husband has a similarly obscure bug in word currently. Don't they even test that shit anymore?

@lizzard it was never possible to test every code change by hand, what's novel is code moving at a velocity where nobody can evaluate it -- and that includes nulling out the tests that might have existed -- as well as creating code "novelties" never conceivable by human minds that evades all testing boundaries.

@jonny

Any chance they'll let you connect thunderbird to your O365 account?

(Or evolution, or Apple mail)

They all support the proprietary OWA protocol, but O365's switch to OAUTH2 means the IT department gets to approve what clients can connect.

@jonny the ones that get me every day are that clicking reply to the last email in a chain which was from you sends the reply to you and not the person you're talking to. Meanwhile reply all doesn't reply to all but it does reply to the person you're talking to. The other one is that in outlook classic if I search for an email and scroll down the list of emails it found with that search term using the mouse wheel it will every few seconds just scroll me right back to the top of the list. The only way to scroll down is to use the scroll bar. Which they've made 1 pixel wide because who ever uses a scroll bar. I have to go on the web interface to search for emails.
