Trying to somewhat wake up before my 7am media interview about fucking stupid orbital "AI datacenters" and I am GRUMPY. This will go well, I'm sure.
Post
@sundogplanets
Will you also be talking about the latest plan (snake-oil) from SpaceX of manufacturing AI computers and satellites on the moon and shooting 1000+ TW/year worth of AI computers into space using a big maglev catapult?
@AkaSci I am just so exhausted by talking about these completely unrealistic ideas based on scifi cautionary tales, where the billionaires completely missed the cautionary part.
@sundogplanets welcome to down under. The orbital data centre concept is crazy stuff I mean just the heat dissapation feels impractical. Be the voice of sense for us all pls!
@sundogplanets You tell them, professor.
@sundogplanets Have a jump/abseil off the Skytower in Auckland, or a bungee jump and see if that will clear your head…
I did the Skytower in Auckland a long time ago - the adrenaline rush afterwards was insane. ⬇️
@HarriettMB Oh my gosh that's such a great photo of you!! I love your facial expression!! Wowwww you are brave
@sundogplanets I’ve never been so terrified of anything in my life. I don’t do heights; and I did this to try and conquer my fear of them. At least I can now look out from a height without falling over, fainting or being sick.
They give you a GoPro to wear so you have a little video after - I’ve lost my video, unfortunately. But the adrenaline rush was INSANE. I can still feel it.
@HarriettMB I can feel the adrenaline rush just from the photo!! Amazing!
And yes, the orbital AI datacenter thing is real, and 2 companies that I know of have already filed with the FCC for over a million satellites for this completely untested, fucking stupid idea. Fuck you, SpaceX, for one million satellites and using pseudo-religious language in your filing.
Instructions on how you can submit a comment to the FCC telling them that you also think this is stupid are here! https://darksky.org/news/two-satellite-proposals-threaten-the-night-sky-the-window-to-act-is-now/
@sundogplanets do the fcc filing provide orbit altitude and size of the object?
@gkrnours Jonathan McDowell has some of that information that he's pieced together from various sources at the very end of his megaconstellations webpage: https://planet4589.org/space/con/conlist.html
@sundogplanets Billionaire worship is a fucking cult. Launching anything close to a million satellites of any size would take a deity level miracle. And many, many engineers have done the math on orbital data centers, and they all come to the same conclusions. "Little" data centers would need to be the size of the ISS. And by little, I mean absolutely tiny.
@sundogplanets Things are getting out of control. So much for human (and AI) intelligence! We seem intent on self-destruction.
@sundogplanets Will submit from NZ. I wonder whether WTO or someone could question to UN/ challenge why FCC is sole regulator of this.
@sundogplanets
Can only US citizens (or residents) submit comments? Or is this open to others as well?
We only *thought* we were worried bout "orbital congestion" and "telescope blindness"...
This will certainly seal both those deals.
These FUCKING supposed "engineers" can't see they're obstructing their own plans for their desired off-planet access/colonization...???
Money now!!!
Reality later!!! (If at all...)
FUCKING idiots all.
🤦♂️🤷♂️🤡🤡🫏🫏🖕🖕💩💩
@sundogplanets Musk wants to IPO Space-X, it’s all noise, just like hyperloop and his stupid robots.
@sundogplanets I am surprised it "is real". In my head, this completely impractical asinine idea was merely a scam to get AI investors' money.
I have to say that the proportion of media interviews and zoom meetings I do in my pajamas has gone up dramatically since I've arrived in New Zealand. Time zones are hard! #ProfSamLectureTour
@sundogplanets welcome to The Far Side. It's so easy for people near +11hours to chat with astro types living nearer Greenwich.
Zoom calls with Californians? They don't even know what "other country" let alone "+11h" means.
@sundogplanets sounds like you're learning to relax more :-)
@sundogplanets i'm envious - of the being in Aotearoa part. 🇳🇿
@sundogplanets A very down under style…
@sundogplanets on the bright side, the engineering hurdles should be enough to prevent this from being put in practice for a reasonable time, shouldn't they?
AFAIK the only reason for this nonsense is avoid all the regulations and social unrest land based datacenters are getting more and more lately.
So I assume the real reason they want to create cities on the Moon and Mars is to avoid the regulations and social unrest they are getting about some island they used to frequent not so long ago.
@sundogplanets oh goodness, that’s trying to be a thing?! I’d be grumpy too.
