I don't think I've ever read fan discussions of this, but the Kingdom of Zeal has always scanned as being a fairly thin analogy about petroleum extraction, to me.
Like, an immensely powerful energy source buried deep in the Earth, from far far in the past, a thing of death itself, that when dug up destroys the world far beyond the damaging effects of the exploitation that led to that calamity?
I just can't really imagine lexing it any other way.
