@rudy It's the calvinist mentality that makes it a funeral dirge. Back in the 16th century it was supposed to be a more upbeat song.
And I noticed that the translation is ... fairly creative.
Fun fact: once Francis Drake was pirating in the Caribbean when he came upon a tiny French colony. The French signalled they were actually Protestant ... by whistling the Wilhelmus. Then Drake didn't attack them.
