In Never Caught, historian Erica Armstrong Dunbar reveals that George Washington bypassed Pennsylvania's Gradual Abolition Act—which required freeing slaves after six months of residency—by rotating his household slaves out of the state before the deadline, often sending them back to Mount Vernon to "reset the clock".
