When I was a student, we were taught that only about 10% of programmers worked at software companies, the rest were writing in-house software that was never distributed. I saw a lot of terrifying things people in that space did (VB Win16 apps talking to a single Access database over ODBC to manage inventory, running on Windows 😜 but still Win16 because they wrote it for VB4 and lost the source code, that kind of thing).
Is it still true? There’s been a general trend to outsourcing IT and using COTS solutions instead of bespoke. Does anyone know what the ratio is now?
