After the talk here in the Wairarapa Dark Sky Preserve, the organizer asked if I want to go stargazing, which was an enthusiastic "of course!" The clouds had cleared, and she drove me about 15 min away from the town where the talk was, to https://star-safari.nz/ where 2 incredible humans teach people about the night sky every night while working through a list of great small telescope targets. I was so impressed!

And I got some good sky photos there and back at my hotel #ProfSamLectureTour

@sundogplanets With those night skies I'd also want to look at them constantly. Beautiful.

@sundogplanets if I recall correctly, Hari used to do excellent talks at Space Place in Wellington just by my apartment there!

@sundogplanets Wow, gorgeous intergalactic view! There's lots of reasons I want to go to New Zealand and/or Australia someday, but night-sky watching is probably at the top of the list.

@sundogplanets Those are gorgeous skies! I would be completely disoriented, I've been to a few dozen countries but never the southern hemisphere.

(Did you hear France launched 32 Amazon satellites today?)

Also I stayed up way too late, and woke up too early, and I have to give another talk tonight in Wellington: https://www.wgtn.ac.nz/scps/about/events/astronomer-vs-the-billionaires-space-race

But at least it's gorgeous here and this is my last night of rapid-fire consecutive talks before I head to Christchurch for my home base for the next 6 weeks (with a few more talks, but not 4 in 5 days in different cities like this week, phew) #ProfSamLectureTour

Kia Ora, Wellington! Time to add some QR codes to my talk (starting in 90 min) to get a few more people to write to the FCC https://darksky.org/news/two-satellite-proposals-threaten-the-night-sky-the-window-to-act-is-now/ #ProfSamLectureTour

Wellington was the best turnout so far on the #ProfSamLectureTour! And judging from my feed, also had the highest ratio of fedi-people!

@sundogplanets Given how corrupt the US government is today, would you say there was a reasonable likelihood of public submissions influencing the decision-making around satellite regulation / launch approvals?

@paw Honestly I don't think it'll make a difference in what happens in the next few months. But I think it is very good for the historic record to show how many people formally opposed this.
