Speaking of Matrix jank... a 7000+ person room that I think is a Fedora room just randomly started notifying me for every message and became an "Empty chat" in my client (definitely not empty).
I'm so sorry but... Matrix really isn't ready for prime time. Please think twice before moving there.

@lina off topic but never thought of you as someone who actually used android, always imagined you would have either a jailbroken iphone or a very prestine one which is only reserved for phone jank (like banking apps) and did the rest with your pc
@lina I'm mostly interested in a good chat+vocal+screen sharing replacement for a very small group of people, so anything (BBB, etc.) could be ok for the a/v part basically, but the chat part, which must include data persistence, and ideally allow for GIFs, graphical stuff, etc. So a local server for my 5-6 friends and me would be good. If a local matrix/xmpp/whatever instance works out, great. Otherwise, we'll be looking elsewhere.

there's an ongoing shock images attack, and the mod tools are completely inadequate for dealing with that

@lina@vt.social well, I say disabled, but really it means "mjolnir will autoremove messages containing images", so they will still flash for a bit
@lina It's impressive how something so popular is so fundamentally broken, like a whole suite of clients for a service that can't even handle the odd densely populated chatroom, there's IRC rooms with 4x this amount of users lmao.

@lina i think definitely my favourite jank in Matrix is when you get giant rooms split.. The unofficial rust chat room had to be restart three times over the two years i've been in it because at some points matrix dot org went offline/became laggy, then came back online, and the state resolution between events that m.org didn't have and those from m.org shat itself, and the room state split in half 🙃 very serious social media platform with a lot of funding btw
(i also have several of these empty rooms! and one spam room i was invited in that i cannot refuse the invite for, despite the room no longer existing, and me not being in it. Fun!)
And no, it's not just a random temporary client glitch. A restart did not help.
Also I checked my desktop client and it also broke, just differently. It does not agree on the number of people in the room. It also seems to think I'm not myself, or at least my avatar is gone (even though it displays on other rooms).

@lina@vt.social To be fair, we just count the members wrong, so I wouldn't trust that number (we include invited members in that count for example). Sorry about that!

And to be clear I'm not bashing any particular client or implementation here, I appreciate nheko. I just think the Matrix protocol and ecosystem has deep-seated issues that make it flaky and unreliable (and worse, see moderation issues) regardless of the specific client/server implementation and I can't possibly recommend it to the average person moving off of Discord...
@deepbluev7 If you want something *possibly* actionable though, a cache clear on Fluffychat I think fixed the mess, but nheko is still missing events and /clear-timeline doesn't seem to help (in fact it seems to lose the last event, though sometimes it brings a previous one back, but definitely isn't recovering the majority of lost events).
I don't know how much of this is server fuckery though...

@lina lol, are those screenshots? but yeah, I think what you're experiencing is a state reset. Are you self-hosting your server, or what are you using? many rooms are intentionally attacked by spammers in order to cause state resets, some are caught by tooling, others are fixed in spec, but there are many ways to fuck up a distributed system we still don't know about. I remember when the TWIM room was similarly affected, it required a full room upgrade to fix it for everyone, but if you're self-hosting it, it might be useful to do a room purge. If not, it depends on what client you use, but if it's element, go to settings, help and about, then click clear cache and reload, that should improve the situation somewhat.

@lina Matrix is a dead protocol, it’s not going to get better. It’s fundamentally broken design-wise, e.g. you will never be able to add proper moderation or CSAM protection to this.
