We have just learnt that this morning’s Undercover Policing Inquiry hearing will NOT be broadcast. The inquiry did not bother informing anyone of this latest development until 2 minutes before the hearing was due to start!
We have to wonder when they took the decision and why they didn't communicate it earlier. Yesterday afternoon's hearing wasn't broadcast either, and again we were given no warning. 🧵
The secrecy is to protect the identity of one or more civilian witnesses who will be under discussion. This is laudable, but such a sweeping blanket ban denies us access to things being said that won't breach anyone's privacy.
It makes it impossible for those Boyling spied on to submit ‘Rule 10 questions’, asking for more information responding to what he's said during those unbroadcast hours.
The inquiry has promised that a redacted video and transcript of yesterday afternoon’s hearing will be made available, sometime.
Given that we're still waiting for them to publish the transcripts of hearings from more than two months ago (ones that were uncontroversial and need no redactions), this may be a very long wait.
