If you have a Ring (Amazon) camera, you are -- or will become -- a tool of the surveillance state. Is that really what you want to be?

Defining this entire parade by the theoretical possibility of a small handful of negative outliers doesn’t guarantee you peace of mind. Rather, it guarantees the opposite: an unceasing focus on the worst, a needless hypervigilance bleeding into anxiety. Thrown into this disordered state, you find yourself easy prey for those who would invent solutions to this imagined problem that they themselves have conjured. The mask of safety hides the sallow face of the predator.
@dangillmor Just throw the Ring into the Fire (TV Stick).

@dangillmor In many of their cases yes it is
@dangillmor just call them what they are:
IF YOU HAVE A RING DOORBELL YOU'RE A TIMID, PARANOID TOOL.
@dangillmor If it’s on WiFi, the data passes through a number of servers and is “stored” somewhere, even if “temporarily”.
And that’s probably obscured in the long fine-print agreement you acknowledged before activating the camera.
@dangillmor this is why we have security cameras running Thingino, which is open source and not beholden to corporate interests or misuse.
@dangillmor if ICE isn’t using this yet they will.
Police use it, just listen to the scanners.
@dangillmor someone needs to figure out how to jailbreak ring doorbells
@dangillmor unfortunately when stupid neighbours install multiple of these crap... So sick of hearing "You are currently being recorded" loudly day & night. Only hope is Jeff gets more greedy and make them obsolete or make the subscription costs go through the roof.
@dangillmor when the Ring was just brought out, i participated in a writing contest with the topic "realistic dystopian"
And my short story was about a world where they used a camera in doorbells to track (gay) people.
Got back the story with the mention it was not realistic...
Well...
See who had the last laugh.
@dangillmor that's why I don't own one.
@dangillmor I wonder if we have to worry about other ring type cameras too or just Ring camera... a member of my household just bought an offbrand one...
@dangillmor thanks for sharing! I thought I was the only one who was scared about this ad. Combined with Tesla camera surveillance this is a wonderful toolset for any authoritarian government.
@dangillmor it was my IMMEDIATE thought, much as the doggo thing is cute (ans very clever cutewashing).
@dangillmor who would have see that coming with all this convenient tools and technologies from all this "don't be evil" rougecapitalist companies.
@dangillmor This eventuality is exactly why I researched and purchased a Eufy instead of Ring. Eufy records locally, not the cloud, on a continuous loop that overwrites itself about every 90 days.
What could possibly go wrong…
