Apart from the remote access feature there's no operational off-shore dependency, and you don't have to use that feature; you can set up Dynamic DNS or get a static IP address.
The mobile apps that give you access to various NAS services (video, audio, files) could be compromised if you have a Google or Apple mobile device.
