i wrote an essay about how our social roles are determined by our society’s modes of production, and how when these change over time so does our sense of identity and our relationship to each other:

@phillmv The anecdotes about the US Civil War and the WWI camp really really struck me. Like, the idea that the first spark initiating a change in gender performance - not just for a single outlier but for A BUNCH of people - was that other people *needed* them to. It really brought home to me that the first step in a change might not be some kind of internal realization, but a "well SOMEONE has to step up!" willingness to serve others.... and, crucially, the similarity to the "they need me to do/be this" pressure people grow up with while being acculturated into normative gender performance.
@brainwane amusingly i hadn’t thought of it in terms of comphet but of course you’re right it works both ways :)
@phillmv Oh hahaha I thought I was just regurgitating back to you something that was already in your essay!
Anyway thanks for writing this and sharing it! BTW I also really appreciated your Year Of Raves piece and shared it on MetaFilter https://www.metafilter.com/209188/what-else-will-I-discover-about-myself
@brainwane i think it falls in line with me not even thinking being trans was an option growing up - of course there’s this massive pressure to conform but you stop even seeing it.
and thanks! yeah i noticed last year 😊 i also spend time on mefi
