🥳 New Kitten release

The release I pushed a few minutes ago brings preliminary Web Numbers support to Kitten.

What are Web Numbers? Well, they’re just a friendlier name for IP Addresses, now that we can deploy secure sites at them. They’re also a cornerstone of how I’m implementing the Small Web.

https://ar.al/2025/06/25/web-numbers/

Web Numbers support isn’t documented yet and isn’t implemented for the `kitten deploy` command but you can play with it, if you like, by passing the --ipv4 or --ipv6 flags to the `kitten` command. The IPv4/stable IPv6 address detection is automatic and uses https://ip.small-web.org for the former (and, of course, no data is collected or stored because it’s us).

Enjoy!

@aral

I'am an amateur self-hoster hobbyist and I find this exciting.

I like the Web Number concept.

I had a similar thought, without the talent nor the ressources to impliment it, why not just have a fixed IP adress just a phone number, wouldn't it be simplier?

I was desappointed to learn that my Internet service provider provides fix IPs only to commercial customers.

@MichelPatrice Thanks! :)

Yeah, we’re kinda in limbo between not enough IPv4 addresses and not enough IPv6 penetration at the moment.

Getting a residential IPv4 is definitely possible but sadly not with every ISP. If IPv6 were universal, we wouldn’t have an issue, anyone could self-host anything at a Web Number from their homes or even their phones if they wanted to.

For the time being, I’m working on making it under a minute to get up and running with your own Small Web site via Catalyst (work in progress) – https://catalyst.small-web.org

Watch this space, I’m working hard to get all this stuff out this year finally :)

@aral

I took a look at the catalyst small web project and saw the link about the indienet project. The link leads to an adult content site, the lady looks like a very person and all but it is probably not the site you wanted to share.
