TIL escalators in the UK move 1.5x faster than those in Korea. What this means for us all is yet to be revealed.

@TheBreadmonkey I was on a giant escalator in Denver at Coors Field after a baseball game, and it broke down. No one knew what to do, and we were stuck. True story!

@TheBreadmonkey here's a rabbit hole if you haven't encountered them before: have you heard of or been in a paternoster lift?

are there any movie action scenes based on them and if not, wtf not?

@TheBreadmonkey @internetsdairy if you'd like a rabbithole... this talk by @deviantollam and Howard (not on Mastodon afaik) is a favourite of mine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZUvGfuLlZus

edit: the talk starts with a warning not to fuck around with lifts and escalators, there's an image of someone injured by an elevator at about 3:00, but there's a fun bit about escalators starting 3:20 that's what brought this to mind

@TheBreadmonkey the ultimate goal is to replace escalators with launchers and crash mats.

@TheBreadmonkey The fastest ones I've found were in Hong Kong. Now those were escalators.

@TheBreadmonkey When the escalator designers were asked about the benefits of the speed difference they commented "It has it's ups and downs".

Also - escalators in Turkey are sensor powered. So they are dormant until engaged.

@TheBreadmonkey When we moved to a new building, the Librarian was shocked at how expensive running an escalator is.
Not including the damage to the kid who tried to ride up on the outside and fell. He lived but not a fun way to discover gravity.

@TheBreadmonkey So they lie in wait until someone rests a foot on the first step. Then they grab a shoe lace and drag the unsuspecting victim thru the shredder hidden beneath the stairs. Do I have that right?

@TheBreadmonkey I think we have those? In Denmark. But the timeout is so long that you rarely see them dormant and you just assume they are broken when they don't go.
