I'm learning, by hard abuse of my mentions. That here on the fediverse, really contentious topics include:
- UBI
- Bike helmets
- Cars.
Toot about those, and you will attract all sorts of absolute bellends. It's a great way of swelling your block list.
At the same time, these topics can also attract the most amazing and wonderful people who write eruditely and beautifully on the topic, even when not completely agreeing.
Shame we have to put up with the former to experience the later.
Hi @quixoticgeek. I toot and boost about those topics (probably without the hashtags) a lot. I can't remember the last time I attracted unwanted attention with that. I have half the followers you do, mind you.
And I've been on two Canadians-only instances, with active moderation - maybe that helps?
The experience sure seems to differ from one instance to another.

And I thought it makes perfect sense. The question of when it is okay to break Application Binary Interface is very contentious. Maybe because I follow many people lucky enough to do low level tech!
@quixoticgeek oh. i was already following you, but yeah. UBI good. cars* bad. bike helmets good. bikes also good.
*that we (in the US) are entirely reliant on cars because we refuse to invest in public transit, that car manufacturers are not held to any reasonable standards in design or emissions... i guess these aren't problems with cars PER SE. but still, cars bad.

@peachfiend bike helmets ok. Mandatory bike helmets bad.
@quixoticgeek oh. well yeah. i wouldn't want to impinge upon anyone's right to bust open their skull, or their kid's.
@peachfiend mandatory helmets would reduce societal health overall by acting as a barrier to cycling. If you want to improve cycle safety, ban cars.

(I'm certainly pro-helmet. That doesn't necessarily mean I'm pro-mandatory-helmet, but I suppose I do kind of lean that way due to secondary indoctrination.)
