We’ve moved our internal communications from Discord to Zulip at Mastodon, and I think there are plans to do the same for our Patreon community Discord. The harder part will be untangling my gaming communities from this…
@Gargron @briankrebs Discord never “clicked” for me, not to mention their “security” and “verification” measures that required to provide a phone number to “verify” me. I had to use it in several cases and these experiences only reaffirmed my feelings about it.

From my PoV I am paying Patreons share. I roughly know what is deducted and select my tier accordingly.
And for me it is worth the money.
I am backing 25+ projects with Mastodon receiving one of the larger backings (since April 2017, my 10-year-anniversary is around the corner).
I have no chance to track my patronages if those are distributed over dozens of services.

@Gargron Discord is just the canary in the coal mine. Soon, all Internet communities will face a choice - either ID everyone or be banned in many countries. Internet anonymity is dead. All because of a couple of despotic regimes that want to be the parents of our children and want to have full control and surveillance over communities that might have "subversive" (i.e., antigovernmental) thoughts. Sometimes I'm glad that I won't live long enough to see it accomplished...
@Gargron I only have Discord accounts bc starting in 2020 seniors in my youth group used one to host engagement during lock down. Six years later they are off to college or work and those who came after have not mentioned Discord at all. So is seems Discord is (fill in the blank) for old people anyway.
@Gargron I get that Discord has a major pedophile problem, but privacy is also important.

@Gargron I have an account, but haven't used it in a while. When I get told to do that I will respond with a full middle finger scan and a suggestion where they can stick it.

I don't understand why all centralized services suddenly insist on actually verifying their users' age for real. What was wrong with asking for a birth date or even just presenting a "yes I'm 18 or older" button? NSFW websites somehow still do just fine with that, but Discord, which is much less "risky" in comparison, somehow needs real verification?
Gosh I miss the old internet.

@waystation Why would you need to do that? You don’t have to use Discord even now, it is optional.
@Gargron @waystation Rather stupidly, a lot of software support and wiki's are now contained only on Discord, which has been a stupid move to be clear. Even purely social communities for almost anything host on Discord now.
The internet is a lonelier place for all the social interactivity it has hoovered up.
Time will tell if Discord have pointed both barrels at their feet and pulled the trigger... But nobody seems happy with the decision.
@Gargron I don't use discord. I never even visit the Patreon. I just didn't know if Patreon is becoming an unsafe space.
@waystation We have a Discord for people who support us on Patreon. We’re planning to move from Discord to Zulip for that purpose instead.
@Gargron Not a participant, but I hope discord dies just because of how many communities it has destroyed.
@Gargron matrix has been a bit of a challenge with voice chat in the past. But for text chat is great. There is also Stoat Chat which does have wonderful group chat system
In place. Lastly if your a happy tinkerer than you an look into the many discord clone projects out there and build the instance locally from the many GitHub repos

There's more than a little unfortunate irony in the Mastodon team jumping ship from Discord to another corporate provider that just hasn't entered its enshitification phase yet.
