The reason "AI" has settled on "chat" as interface is because what they are actually selling is domination. They are selling you having a personal slave. That's their hook.

@tante LLMs can only really do chat, or something that requires a human in the loop. all they do is generate a reasonable-looking answer to a question. not right; not an actual answer. just something that looks reasonable. if there was no-one looking at the answer, there would be no point.

i agree that at least some of the folks behind this bubble are selling an intelligent servant who it's somehow okay to mistreat; a slave. but the reality is, they can't deliver that.

@tante There is a lot of truth in that “shoggoth wearing a happy face mask” meme, as well as truth in the general metaphor that “AI” is a shoggoth.

But it’s important to remember that the shoggoth is also a myth dreamed up by a deeply racist author, and other metaphorical frames are worth considering when we think about whether and how this technology could be made serviceable without being a multiplier for the power of hyper-wealthy elites.

@tante

Karen Hao’s *Empire of AI* tells the story that they did the chat interface as a hack, and were completely blindsided by its popularity.

In literature, slaves are invisible (conveniently making them a point of view to observe perfidy), not someone that “masters” chat with.

@tante they published completions api and interfaces and it didn't catch on. Then they published chatGPT and it exploded.

@tante Nothing hooks people as being their own small dictator, while true dictators run their lives. Such misdirection.

Also, this is very close to the abuse cycle of bullies.

@tante It's either the personal slave or the mass psychosis cause the chatbot "gets you"

@alatiera I think that's gonna be the new business unit. Basically they all want to make you rent and emotional support. Which is a super healthy thing to do of course.

I don’t think so. The reason ist these „AI“ is LLMs.
It is not intelligent at all, but it can one thing: read and generate text.

Chat presumably provides the most training data too?
