lol its still so stupid that ppl in the tech industry didn't want to unionize when they had all the power

Fellow tech workers: The librarians are roasting us on Mastodon and we have no plausible defense

One thing I'm learning from making this post is that tech workers in Germany are actually doing pretty well on the unionization front

@mcc ha! I joined a union¹ when starting my first (tech) job, I'm un-roasted!

(But I don't do any union work, I just give them some money. And I wouldn't be surprised if I'm the only one in my company who is part of a union, so in reality I'm not really "unionizing" that much…)

¹technically a "Gewerkschaft", the German equivalent of a union

well, it is merely a question of solidarity.
Our funding picture https://web.archive.org/web/20230531001836im_/https://freelens.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/Jahrestreffen_1995_Steche-1.jpg
I'm the guy very bottom left and was 16.

Shortly after France built their union freelens and others too.

On the other hand - after all my cameras sank into South Pacific, I switched to writing fedi software and this might _not_ be a question of countries alone.

The solidarity in the tech sector is anywhere much lower than amongst journalists. Maybe this is due to the fact that old white valley people in chairs are not threatened directly by Kalashnikows pointed through the head or sinking boats. The tech sector thinks mostly it is the privileged sector and this is the opposite of, well, solidarity …

@mcc @sl007 yeah, Germany is definitely better off in regards to unions and labour laws (not that surprising, since strong unions lead to better labour laws), but I can also attest to tech (office) workers being underrepresented in unions :(

I’m only familiar with US union busting in the 1920s-30s and onward by the oligarchs hiring the US Army to gun them down if they got too uppity or successful. Did similar happen in Europe?
