@decryption When are you starting the build?
@decryption When are you starting the build?
@decryption Kenard’s self storage tier DC.
@haakon I used to buy ex-lease computer gear from a guy who setup shop in a Kennards storage unit, had a counter and a test bench too
@decryption When are you starting the build?
@PCOWandre definitely before the end of June so I can cop the business losses this financial year
@decryption I presume some difference in security (none in a warehouse; plenty in a datacentre); as well as rather better QoS in terms of both data and electricity. But it’s an interesting exercise.
@james hobby/non-mission critical stuff, at a much lower price
@decryption you can get fibre handoff across most of VicTrack’s footprint: https://www.victrack.com.au/services/telecommunications
@decryption ton of extra stuff in the DC though, like fully redundant power on a scale you could never achieve yourself, 24/7 security and monitoring, HVAC ongoing maintenance ...
@mike decryption's dodgy datacenter doesn't need that
@decryption @mike Sound lit mate when can I shop you a pallet of dodgy old pcs i pulled from a dumpster to rack up?
@firstyear @decryption @mike where do I pre order 2RU of space?
@sjtrny @firstyear @mike gimme a few weeks to get my shit together
@decryption @sjtrny @firstyear yeah look I have notes on your calculations here but I'm not saying "no" to getting 6RU of kit out of my back room. My current dodgy setup is much dodgier than this haha
@decryption and maybe you could sublet the warehouse too 😉
@decryption Don't forget the price of dissipating that 6.6kW of heat before it cooks your servers! The datacentre option would factor in that cost.
@tj @decryption With enough space and related surface area 'warm room with a fan' is a legitimate cooling strategy.
@tj true - many of these warehouses have a mezzanine area that's enclosed and air conditioned, would run that most of the time in summer at least, so that's around 1kw/hr all day every day, another $2k or so a year roughly
can get 2000/2000 from Vocus for $1100/m if the warehouse is in the right spot (I assume Vocus' footprint is pretty large)
@decryption nexthop has a 1000/1000 for $499 promo at the moment. https://www.nexthop.com.au/1g-internet/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=papal_edict
@decryption (At least around here) quite a few providers have their own fibre up to 10000/10000 for cheaper than the NBN enterprise equivalent (where it exists)
@oxyhyxo ive seen that but damn it's hard to get info on the locations they serve (i know the adelaide CBD has it and that rules, but beyond that I'm unsure)
@decryption Yeah it requires quite a bit of spelunking unfortunately. And even then you’re not assured of it until you actually sign the lease and move in
@oxyhyxo makes it really tough when internet access is the priority, not location
@decryption My whole life 😔
