My family spent a year(ish) in England in 1973-4 (when I was 8ish) and I fondly remember TotP, cheesy as it was -- and being surprised, when I came back to the US, that some of the artists I liked most were unheard-of here.

(Also Dr. Who, but that's another genre entirely.)
