The clothes dryer died a couple weeks ago. We've been hanging clothing up on lines in the laundry room or taking some loads to the laundramat, which reminds me in a warm way of my younger days. Always liked the laundramat because there was nothing much to do but read a book or people-watch. It made you stop all your bustling. It was a blessing in the 80s and 90s not to have the internet in your pocket.

@impermanen_ I wrote over 1K characters and then a glitch deleted it, poof! I got frustrated. I’ll try again.

@Moss oh no! Hang in there. Because if there’s one thing I’m sure of, it’s that the world needs more laundromat stories.

The thing about the dryer failing is that we've been determined to to fix it not replace it.

We replaced some electronics with after-market parts that we ordered from Vietnam. No luck. Brought in a repairman. He talked us through the diagnosis as he did it. Fun! He waxed eloquent about how these old dryers from the 90s are better built and easier to repair.

Feels good to repair old equipment instead of throwing it into a landfill and replacing it with new enshittified pollution-intensive crap.

While the repair guy was here he helped us figure out preventive maintenance on the old washer and agreed to replace a couple of plastic hoses that were about to fail. Huge water mess averted, which wouldn't have happened if we'd just picked up a new dryer at Best Buy.

It's expensive either way, money we don't have to spare. But paying for labor and minimal parts and learning a little about how the equipment works is priceless.

@impermanen_ Good luck! The old ugly refrigerator that I picked up for free and we use in the garage seems more reliable than our fancy one that we have in the house. I think the control board was damaged in an electrical surge and we need to reset it from time to time.

It's a great feeling to be able to repair stuff. Sometimes it doesn't work out, but at least you tried! I'm very proud of fixing my chainsaw myself this past year.
