Okay, Internet, I am throwing a Star Wars cantina themed birthday party and am trying to nail down a batch cocktail to serve as “spotchka.” According to lore, it is a glowing blue drink made from krill:

https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Spotchka

I don’t know if it’s explicitly stated that it’s alcoholic, but it feels implied based on the drink showing up in bars and cantinas and in gambling contexts.

I won’t be making something fishy, but I thought tropical would be fun. Suggestions?

@cassidy I invented something last year that’s kind of like a Blue Hawaiian but better — I call it the Russian Expat https://github.com/darkuncle/cookbook/blob/master/russian_expat.txt

(It’s pretty sweet; a little lemon juice in there would probably go well. Or some passion fruit puree)

@cassidy If you can rig some black lights in your cantina (seems appropriate) there are lots of options for glowing drinks using tonic water and B12.

@cassidy How about a "Blue Hawaiian"? It's a classic tropical drink and very light blue. I've included a photo but you could 'de fancify' it and make it more star wars-y

White Rum 1.5 oz
Blue Curaçao 0.75 oz
Pineapple Juice 2 oz
Cream of Coconut 0.75 oz
Fresh Lemon Juice 0.5 oz

@scottjenson yes! This is pretty similar to what I have been going for, but I think the cream of coconut might be what I'm missing for the lightness and opacity. Thank you!

@scottjenson @cassidy Curacao is indispensable for this project. It would just be wrong to make a blue cocktail without it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cura%C3%A7ao_(liqueur)

@scottjenson @cassidy And if you really want to lean into "krill": https://www.reddit.com/r/ShrimpsIsBugs/comments/1csy27t/shrimps_is_soda/

So far a top contender is an “ocean water” cocktail which just seems like a blue Malibu pineapple. I made a trial this evening and wow it's too blue and too sweet. I would need to reduce the blue curaçao and add another liquor I think to balance it. Maybe some bitters?? Or something else to make it more interesting. Idk.

@cassidy Looks like a blue almost aquamarine. I'm not sure what would work, but I would use some blue food coloring maybe? reddit: https://www.reddit.com/r/cocktails/comments/mjeng7/i_made_spotchka_star_wars_cocktails_for_my/
The fun is in the mixing anyways ;)

@cassidy blue Hawaiians are good, and opaqueish (depends on the pineapple juice or blended ice).

Tonic water glows under a black light. So maybe a blue gin and tonic with a black light near the bar.

@hotsoup I did think about the black light trick… I wasn't planning on it but might do something like that. Since I'm serving it as a batch cocktail, I also thought of serving mineral water as a mixer (does it glow, too? 🤔) so it doesn't just go flat in the cocktail.
