Today's nerd info:

Denmark is known for its national flag, the Dannebrog. 🇩🇰

But the largest peninsula of Denmark, Jutland, actually has its own flag called Den Jydske Fane. It was created in 1975 by artist Per Kramer, and can legally be flown in Denmark as a symbol for the region.

It has a green area in the middle with blue around it, symbolizing the green forests of the peninsula with sea on both sides. On top is a red brown cross symbolizing the heathlands of central Jutland.

And then you have Skåne (Scania in English)...

Here are some of the Nordic countries with a twist. There's Norway, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, and then Skåne (Scania). It is one of three territories that Denmark handed to Sweden in the Treaty of Roskilde in 1658. The red squares come from the Danish flag, and the yellow cross comes from the Swedish flag.

@randahl speaking of flags, were there any restrictions on when/by whom/how Dannebrog can be flown in Denmark?

I remember many tiny triangle versions, but rarely the full flag and I have a tiny memory or imagination of being told about restrictions and why people choose to fly the small version instead.

@ttrasuns As far as I remember the smaller triangle flag has more lenient rules/guidelines - One being that you can fly it at night whereas you cannot fly Dannebrog after sundown

@bno that is correct. The “vimpel” is a 24h flag, whereas the normal Dannebrog is for daytime only. The Danish flag law is extremely complex, and was originally introduced because Danes wanted to prevent German sympathizers from flying the German flag. However, today we gladly raise the German flag in summer cottages to welcome German guests, and that is now legal. Similarly, all nordic flags have been legalized to accommodate, Nordic nationals living in Denmark.

Although, I am somewhat ambivalent about the historic Christian symbolism on flags representing multi-religious countries in which a majority of people are atheists.

I do not mind it, but I just think it feels somewhat anachronistic. So for that reason, I find it meaningful that Greenland chose a circle instead of the cross. That is my favorite Nordic flag — especially because it depicts the setting sun: 🇬🇱

@randahl @benroyce It's not only Greenland who has the circle among the regions of the Nordic countries, also the Sami has a circle in their flag, the colors are based on popular colors in Sami gaktis and the circle is a reference to a poem where the Sami are described as "sons and daughters of the sun".

So simplified we could say southerners carry crosses while northerners enjoy the sun. 😜
