I could give my money to a well established hoster company like OVH, Hetzner and so on.
Or I could go fully insane and rent rack space.
I mean its 70/30 for renting rack space right now.
I really do not want to give my money to another big hoster and I think I'm outgrowing my self hosting possibilities (upload is the bottleneck).
@js hard to beat Hetzner's used server offerings rn (https://hetzner.de/sb), but if you need a lot of room and scaling for your VMs, co-lo can indeed be the way to go for savings long term.. Best if the DC is a drive or train away such that you can swap in/out hardware if/when needed. Staff time for hardware fiddling can be expensive, a brutal hidden cost.

In all seriousness, first: Thank you. Second: I'm thinking about doing this all by myself with a friend to prove that it's not impossible. ("How hard can it be?")
We are programming a lot of the tooling ourself, because we can. We don't want any YAML nor Python.
Maybe we are our own demise, but we will stand by the principles we have about computer systems, where to rent and where to deploy.
@JulianOliver It's not about reinventing the wheel, but to build the tooling for us.
We have stable incomes, we can f around and find out.
I can't stand the thought of giving my money to another big company. Although I have been a happy Hetzner customer for years, I can not support the idea of centralizing infrastructure even more.
For real, if I could get a real uplink at home (and my families place) I'd host everything for ever here and over there.

@js No worries. It you have a lot of bandwidth at home and can afford thus to cut into it with the combined upload hit of your services, great! Some don't have that privilege & some that do don't want to give their local shady ISP even more money, rather a DC.
I do a bit of both.
If you host your services yourself at a DC, it's still selfhosting - location does not define it. It's about control, which is relative. For instance a DC has as much control over your upstream as your ISP does.
