Hey, remember that time I said that pointing out that AI is giving bad data to ICE is missing the point because ICE doesn't actually care if the data is good? Check out how right I am.

https://www.wired.com/story/cbp-ice-dhs-mobile-fortify-face-recognition-verify-identity/

WIRED

ICE and CBP’s Face-Recognition App Can’t Actually Verify Who People Are

ICE has used Mobile Fortify to identify immigrants and citizens alike over 100,000 times, by one estimate. It wasn't built to work like that—and only got approved after DHS abandoned its own privacy rules.

@evacide
I pretty much always assume you're right. That said, it often makes me sad.

@evacide the article doesn't mention it, but it's well known to researchers that facial recognition is especially unreliable when the subject is not a fair-skinned Caucasian.

@evacide they intend to try a "I was just following AI" defense. It didn't work for the last group that tried to outsource their morality to "orders."

@evacide Call me crazy, but the most terrifying thing to me in this article is: "Asked what supported probable cause, the agent cited the woman speaking Spanish, her presence with others who appeared to be noncitizens, and a “possible match" via facial recognition."

Holy goodness that is not probable cause. The 4th amendment is no more.

@evacide I think much of this is intentional and a type of DDoS attack: flood different zones to overwhelm them. Flood courts with illegal, bogus cases. Flood cities with violence. Withdraw federal aid and funding to overwhelm state and local resources. Flood feeds with scandal and spectacle. The list goes on…

Collectively I think we can defeat these attacks

@evacide The worst thing is, if they just used face recognition for passport verification, to eliminate human-judgement from the loop and speed things up (a la european passport control for EU citizens), I'd at least be okay with it. And then, for every kinda-okay use of facial recognition, they come up with something that's completely bullshit, and the law can't cope.
