People who are "just asking questions" and "just sharing their opinion" that nobody asked for are in the minority here.

But until reply controls are implemented by more fediverse platforms, they will continue to ruin the experience of people here, and contribute to our community's negative reputation.

Let's continue to call this stuff out, and when appropriate, also report it.

@stefan Yes. Also: I think our thread has a “hide comment” is brilliant. The commenter never knows that their comment was hidden, but it is immediately invisible to everyone.

@tchambers Yes, we definitely need a variety of tools here.

I keep drawing parallels to blogging. Mastodon is a micro-blogging platform.

On my blog, I have full control of what appears under my posts. I never once in my life got called out for not having comments enabled.

Maybe I don't want to deal with spam. Others who are more likely to attract harassment just based on their identity will likely not want to deal with that either.

I think people are a bit closeminded when it comes to understanding that we all experience the web differently, have different needs and challenges.

Some people seem to care more about being able to talk back at strangers.

@stefan @tchambers Did you mean to say "Threads"? That does sound like an amazing tool. To block amazing tools. ☺️

If you see someone questioning racism in the fediverse, have them read https://privacy.thenexus.today/start-making-the-fediverse-less-toxic/.

Some people might think they're "actually helping" by inundating strangers with unwanted opinions and suggestions.

Have them try https://static.stefanbohacek.com/mansplaining/.

5 things white people can do to start making the fediverse less toxic for Black people

Anti-Blackness is a long-term problem in the fediverse. Now's a good time to start changing that.

You might think that bullying individuals into doing things "the right way" works, but it doesn't, not always. Remember to lead by example!

@stefan Instead of "not always" I'd say "hardly ever".

And the resentment it builds while not working is far more detrimental than the progress it brings in the rare instances when it does work.
