🐧 Linux From Scratch becomes the latest victim of systemd

「 Another reason for the decision to end System V init support was upstream software trends. And more specifically, major desktop environments, including GNOME and KDE Plasma, are increasingly introducing a hard dependency on systemd-specific functionality that is not available in System V init 」

Linux From Scratch reluctantly confirms a systemd-only future, ending System V init development due to mounting maintenance pressure and upstream changes.

@jbz From the article: "Yes, systemd provides a lot of capabilities, but we will be losing some things consider important."
I don't understand what is so bad with systemd and is considered so important with "System V init".

@MadMike77 My understanding is that System V init is much smaller and simpler.

But beyond the relative merits of systemd and System V init, which I am not an expert on, the increasing dependency of the Linux ecosystem on systemd is a loss of robustness. Fundamental low-level components should be replaceable. There should be at least two independent implementations from which systems integrators can choose. Nobody knows what might one day happen to systemd.
