I dunno about anime, but if video games were at all reflective of reality, Japanese kids would be saving the world by slaying evil gods with really large swords on a weekly basis.
You may ask, “who has the really large sword: the Japanese kids or the evil gods?” The answer: “yes.”
@farah I remember thinking this when I saw the Studio Ghibli movie "Ponyo". It had the world's most responsible 5-year-old boy.
@farah Funnily we just talked about Japan this morning at breakfast. Probably the most foreign developed country for both of us, a Chinese and a German migrant living in Australia.
I was so f-ing sheltered as a kid, I grew up to be a totally useless adult. Even though I’ve always wanted to but I don’t thing there are many things that I’ve actually done solo
I'm sure it helps to live in an intensely civilized culture.
I have it on good authority that there are no trash bins in public places because everyone is expected to take their trash home with them (which they do!).
...and then in general there's stuff like, you know, having decent public transportation so kids can get around despite not being old enough to drive. I was given a lot of independence as a kid -- spent hours riding my bike within maybe a mile of our house...
[rant/ramble begins]
...but we lived one block over from the intersection of NC 751 (2 lanes, technically 35 MPH but definitely not a safe suburban street) and another similarly-fast road (45 MPH, I think), neither of which we were allowed to cross until we were teenagers or so. ...and there were no stores, parks, libraries, or anything within that boundary except endless rows of highly indivdualized single-family homes with lawns and two or more cars each.
(For anyone who has noticed the omission: the other corner of the neighborhood was and is still occupied by Duke Golf Course -- which served as a sort of park, because they hadn't yet gotten strict about keeping out the riff-raff. I probably rode there the most, and no doubt ruined a few shots with the loud rattling of my bike. ...and on the far side of that, NC 751 wraps around and gets wider; the 4th side was/is NC 15-501, a freeway.)
@farah Yeah, tripped me out the first time I heard of this. And this is coming from someone who had to go to therapy in part to stop being a helicopter parent. I was SO paranoid that something bad was always around the corner and would hurt my child.
