The FAA urged aircraft operators to ensure they have enough fuel in case they are put in a holding pattern due to a rocket explosion.

We found that several planes ran low on fuel after the Jan. 2025 Starship incident. At least one declared a mayday and crossed the no-fly zone to reach an airport.

FAA Warns Airlines About Safety Risks From Rocket Launches, Urges “Extreme Caution”

The agency’s official safety alert comes as SpaceX looks to ramp up Starship tests. A recent ProPublica investigation found that explosions during previous Starship launches disrupted air traffic and forced pilots to scramble for safety.

@ProPublica

Another cost Elon Musk has managed to externalize.

Flying around with extra pounds of fuel not needed for normal operations, with the usual fudge factor, is economically wasteful. Heavier then need be aircraft make for avoidable work for aircraft, engines, runways, mechanics, budgets, and other services. That adds up quickly.

Cool, so, has anybody worked out how much extra CO2 we're going to generate hauling around fuel reserves to protect people from (checks notes) entirely foreseeable consequences of some dickhead's FAFO excuse of a development cycle?

@ProPublica those rocket companies should be paying the airlines to haul around that extra fuel. Not up to them to eat these negative externalities caused by others.

Commercial operators should sue #SpaceX to recover costs incurred by SpaceX launch failures.

@ProPublica

Or, and hear me out on this, we take all of SpaceX's assets and give them to NASA and then put Elon Musk on a raft and push it out into the ocean.

Spacex should be grounded until they have proven twice that they can reach orbit safely

Don't ask me how they can do that. Fuckem.
