I was interested in this story that the enormous French multinational Capgemini immediately decided to sell off a US subsidiary when it discovered it was contracting with ICE - https://www.lemonde.fr/en/france/article/2026/02/01/french-it-giant-capgemini-to-sell-us-subsidiary-after-row-over-ice-links_6750021_7.html

Is the US becoming a toxic investment environment even to multinational corporations ?

French IT giant Capgemini to sell US subsidiary after row over ICE links

After being the subject of questions in Parliament and calls for transparency from the government, the company said the process of selling its US subsidiary would begin 'immediately.'

Indeed. I see the dollar is heading down again too. A year ago it was worth nearly 98 eurocents - now it's down near 83.

This is a sign that France enjoys a healthy democracy.

This is how democracies support each other. Even from far away, they can monitor the ethics of their private sector.

"French lawmakers, including Finance Minister Roland Lescure, had asked the company to shed light on the contract amid concern over the tactics used by ICE agents following the fatal shooting of two U.S. citizens in Minnesota last month."

@GeofCox I hate the pretense that they were just shocked and appalled to discover that this subsidiary was contracting with ice to hunt down human beings. I'm sure the contracts were known about internally widely and it only became problematic for them recently because of the intense animosity towards ICE and its murderous violence which has now become globally significant news which just won't go away.

Of course it's hard to unravel the real motivations - a genuine ethical stand, uncertainty over the US legal/financial environment, or just the desire to avoid bad publicity... However, I doubt the ICE contract was known to the French management. Capgemini works in over 50 countries, and this particular US subsidiary's total revenue represented only 0.4% of the group's global revenue, and less than 2% of even its total US revenue.

@GeofCox Having been the UK’s representative on Capgemini’s international works council I was impressed by the French HQ’s social responsibility credentials and enjoyed working with them.
