I highly recommend this article about the massive U-turn that Canadian immigration policy has taken over the past few years. I've always taken Canada's self-mythologizing about how welcoming the country is towards newcomers with a HUGE grain of salt, but this essay encapsulates just how heartless our immigration system currently is.
