I highly recommend this article about the massive U-turn that Canadian immigration policy has taken over the past few years. I've always taken Canada's self-mythologizing about how welcoming the country is towards newcomers with a HUGE grain of salt, but this essay encapsulates just how heartless our immigration system currently is.
"Welcome to Canada! Please help prop up our massively underfunded post-secondary education system and then get blamed for how similarly underfunded healthcare and infrastructure is. Oh, those pathways to permanent resident status? We changed our minds! Sorry, eh!"
It's not mentioned in this article, but isn't it beyond time that we revisit our "safe" third country agreement with the U.S.?
