am overcome with gratitude. after hours of searching usenet, ftp indexers, ftp sites, archive.org, discmaster and every archival tool i know of and coming up with zilch, i jusssst found the MacMOOSE software buried in a professor's apache open dir! he worked in the same research group as MacMOOSE (Epistemology & Learning Group @ MIT) and had the foresight to make a tarball of the lab's FTP server before it died years ago

this is the kind of archival once in a million thing - that someone self-archived an incredibly important and obscure piece of software by accident, and left a copy on the web. thank you prof fred g. martin 馃檹

this archive of the MIT ELG ftp server is going straight to archive.org.

@vga256 The feeling of finding a seemingly lost piece software is amazing.

I had it once with the Windows 3.1 driver for a S3 Virge PCI card, where the commonly available version didn't work for my card but after I long search I found a slightly updated driver at a Spanish university's HTTP-FTP. That was an amazing feel.

The driver in question is now over at VogonsDrivers, but I see the FTP site is gone and not very well indexed by archive.org. Maybe I should've archived it all :/

@loadhigh @vga256

Because I'm naturally messy and haven't had a catastrophic disk failure yet, I went through my Downloads folder last year and found several projects that had disappeared off of the Internet completely.

(They're at https://codeberg.org/suetanvil-mirrors, BTW_)

If you're the sort of person who downloads stuff on a whim and then keeps it around just in case, it may be worthwhile to do a treasure hunt through it sometime to see if any of it has disappeared from the web.

Codeberg.org

suetanvil-mirrors

Organization to stuff that I want to have handy but didn't write or maintain myself.
