So corner coffee and donuts on the sidewalk inviting all the neighbors (and anyone else passing by) was so successful now we're talking about making it a regular thing

@grimalkina Oh, I'd love to hear more about how you approached this. For example: Did you tell neighbors in advance that you were planning it? Set out lawn chairs, a table, or a tent? What prompted the idea and what convinced you to make it reality? What notes would you suggest to others who want to follow your example?
The best "meet your neighbors" thing I ever did was wandering around the neighborhood on Halloween when a bunch of people were expecting visitors anyway. It was great but for whatever reason I never did it again…
@jamey We built a little free library we wanted to celebrate so we had something to share with them, but we had talked about doing this anyway.
We picked an hourlong block on a saturday morning, hand-drew flyers and dropped them into our neighbors' mailboxes 1-2 days before. We felt SOOOO anxious and silly doing this but people LOVED it.
We picked up donuts from a fancy local place and a basic coffee carafe. Easy easy. We picked up paper plates and napkins
we set the table up on the strip by the road so no one had to come into our yard (I THINK THIS WAS A GREAT IDEA!) and you could just walk down the sidewalk, it was right off the sidewalk. We made it look nice with a tablecloth
We took a giant piece of cardboard from a delivery box and wrote FREE DONUTS AND COFFEE + ICE OUT on the sign
@jamey we didn't have any chairs, but we have some big plants that provided shade. Next time we will move our lawn umbrella out to the sidewalk (it's v sunny in San DIego). But people were happy to stand and talk, they stayed for HOURS!
We don't know much about little kids (lol) but Ashley cut up strips of paper and put out colored pencils to draw your own bookmarks and this was a big hit with the neighbors' kids who went to town on it. That was a great idea
@jamey people felt personally invited (they were!) and thought of. It was so sweet. Multiple people told us they wanted us to do this again 😂
@jamey I think having fun and free food gives people something to walk up and do and breaks the ice so they're not just walking up wondering what to say
