The child, whose age is not public, sustained minor injuries according to Waymo. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating.

@lauren Every one of these deaths can be laid squarely at the feet of CAL DOT, who approved them for use on public roadways, with *zero* safety testing.

California has blood on its hands.

@lauren When I started in system safety, an experienced engineer explained that you start with, say, 10 deaths caused by a system. You introduce a safety measure, and that drops to 5 per year, BUT 2 of those 5 will have been caused by the new safety measure.

We were discussing the role of TCAS in the Überlingen disaster, but it's a general point about safety engineering that stuck with me.
