‼️In #NewMexico today: HB 9, Immigrant Safety Act, voted out of House Judiciary Committee. Prohibits localities and state from contracting with ICE or private prison operators for immigration detention centers. Important, good amendment added: prevents state and local law enforcement from cooperating with feds on civil immigration enforcement.

The Immigrant Safety Act has passed the House Judiciary committee with a vote count of 7-4
The committee amended the bill, adding critical new protections that prohibit state and local governments in New Mexico from entering into 287(g) agreements
with ICE that turn local law enforcement into immigration agents.
New Mexico has proven once again that we are not powerless against ICE and their inhumane treatment of our immigrant communities. The Immigrant Safety Act is
critical step for the safety of our families and ensures we hold these systems accountable for the cruelties they create.
Special thank you to our friends for sharing testimonies today: @elcentronm @nativevoters @equalitynm @nmilc @innovationlawlab @somosunpueblo
@thesemillaproject @melanieinthe505 @contigojustice @protectnm and Seth S. Constituent of House District 69
It will now be heading to the House Floor!
