@HarriettMB

Whenever people feel the status-quo is failing them, or disintegrating, they move to the political extremes, for obvious reasons. Labour has moved to the centre - to defend the status-quo - just as lots of voters are moving away from it. Which way voters move though is not necessarily rational - most people are not well informed, nor are they particularly interested in politics - at least as politics is represented in the media. They know they want things to change, but don't know who to believe will make the right changes.

Left/green and right are opposed only in terms of their ideas and values - voters move easily between them. It's well recognised in France that a large group of RN (extreme right) voters are former communists. They were never really communists, nor are they now fascists - but the Communist Party once seemed to offer a credible route out of their oppression, now RN seems a more immediate prospect.

Maybe, like Americans, they have to actually see the right fail before coming back to the left.

@Geri I hope the #Greens win by a good margin, that Reform are a poor second.

@HarriettMB me too.

Looking at the demographic of the constituency, though. The north of it seems to be predominantly white working class, and that may lead to a strong Reform turn out?

It 'may' actually hinge on whether Labour see Reform as the threat or the Greens?

I believe Labour has put out a video having a go at Reform this morning.

@Geri I cannot fathom the ‘logic’ of a former Labour voter, in a Labour heartland who loathes Tories and would now vote ReformLtd. Since Labour have betrayed all their values, and Tories never had them, and ReformLtd are comprised of old failed Tories… the obvious choice is Green: or LibDem for those feeling soft. It makes no sense at all to even consider Reform at all.

@HarriettMB

It makes sense in the context of Labour spending so many years taking their votes for granted without offering anything in return. Most of the RefUK voters in the old red wall had voted Labour for generations before New Labour.

@ReggieHere

Indeed - if you look at the actual statistics, rather than the media mythology, the decline in Labour votes in the Red Wall started not with Corbyn, but with Blair.

@GeofCox

Absolutely. People forget that most of the old left were politically homeless when Labour shifted right, which left a huge number of disenfranchised voters for the far right to court.

@HarriettMB ignorance

Did you see my post about Facebook where I set up a blank account, did nothing, clicked on nothing, followed no one, and let the TL slide by

I revisted it after one month and it was populated with Good Old England nostalgia like Fools and Horses, The Office, but worryingly 'jokes' about burqas and Reform Adverts

I realised that. Reform HAVE PAID FACEBOOK to seed everyone's TL with propaganda

And that's where the battlefield is

No one reads newspapers

This is well understood and conveniently ignored. US social media platforms are a political influencing tool, which is why so many far-right pundits get upset at European attempts to block Xitter or Facebook.

@HarriettMB @Geri You are absolutely correct that it makes no sense at all. Sadly, however, it's been a while since politics has made any sense.

@GeofCox @HarriettMB @statsguy @Geri Labour has been moved to the Centre-Right. I'm struggling to see ex-LibDem Zack Polanski as an extremist for wanting to reduce inequality and 'bring back hope'. He's a Radical Social Liberal, like me. I would also like humanity to survive Climate Chaos.
