A group of American ICE agents is set to travel to Italy and provide additional security to the US delegation during the Winter Olympics. "It's not like the SS are coming," Italy's Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said.

These comments come as Milan's Mayor Giuseppe Sala criticized the presence of ICE agents in his city.

"They are not welcome in Milan, without a doubt," he told RTL Radio 102.

According to Sala, the agents' presence is "not aligned with our democratic way of managing security."

Sala has been a vocal critic of ICE's operations in the US. (ibid) 2/4

I spent yesterday evening at the German legislature, there was an opening of an exhibition on “people with Jewish biographies” who chose to stay in Germany and even served as members of parliament. To try to rebuild their country, they had to work with perpetrators, accommodators, and beneficiaries who also populated parliament and all German cities.

One speaker insisted that there should be no analogies made to the unique era. 3/4

Many historians attended, and I asked one behind me (queuing for food) whether he’d agreed with that statement. He went nonlinear. “You can’t possibly say something is unique, AND that it must never be repeated. One or the other!!”

He didn’t want to specifically discuss America though. No one did, not even a Canadian journalist I met, specialist on the Middle East. But I can’t help thinking of America’s coming versions of such events I am attending now in Germany. 4/4 #neverAgain #nieWieder
