In local news, the Tongoloina irrigation dam on the Sisaony river, 12 km (7.5 mi) south from me, broke during the weekend and required emergency efforts to keep it from also taking out the adjacent levee (which would have endangered large tracts of rice fields plus around five thousand houses).

The dam was brand new. Construction started in 2022, finished in 2024, and cost a fortune that many now consider suspicious.

The current government is promising zero tolerance towards companies that deliver botched public works.

@erkhyan That's terrible! Do you have faith in the new governments willingness and ability to prosecute and stop this kind of corruption?
