Monthly Active Users (MAU) latest figures (depending on who you believe for the other platforms)

Facebook 3.07 billion
Telegram 1 billion
Threads 400 million
twitter 353.9 million
Bluesky 12.23 million
Fedi 1,039,049

For every engagement (boost/fave) on Fedi, it is the equivalent to

3,000 on Facebook
1,000 on Telegram
400 on Threads
340 on twitter
12 on Bluesky

However! This also understates Fedi’s real engagement because Fedi users are far more active per capita, there is no algorithm and timelines are presented chronologically (and far less bot-driven than somewhere like twitter).

So when you think your interesting / clever / funny post *only* got 20 boosts or likes..... that would be nearly seven thousand on twitter or 60k on Facebook!

@TheBreadmonkey Alternatively, it’s like telling a joke to a crowded pub and one person kind of half-smirking.

@TheBreadmonkey One of the worst changes they made to Twitter was the view count for every tweet. And then all the Nazi stuff. That’s bad too.

PLEASE NOTE - I do realise this isn't how everyone views social media and that value based on volume engagement (rather than the quality of engagement) is a sickness and not real. I just always think it's interesting that years of Facebook then Twitter with limited engagement outside of my little circle of people..... and then Fedi where it's a vast rich community of funny and interesting gorgeous geniuses. Then seeing jokes about engagement (which I myself have made) - particularly for newer people - just thought it was an interesting way to frame it. X

@TheBreadmonkey In honor of these very nice words obviously directed at me, I thought I would finally share a selfy to the fedi.

@TheBreadmonkey There's also the quality of attention:

Going demi-viral (200-600 likes) on Twitter? A terrible, nightmarish ordeal, you're swamped with people hating you just because, terrible thirst messaging, people misinterpreting everything in the worst way possible, The Fear of someone making you the main character of the day...

Going viral on Mastodon/Fediverse (100-1k likes): Hundreds of people just politely enjoying your message, people having thoughtful conversations around or on topic in your mentions, exactly no more than five people being weird or unpleasant and in an easily ignored way!

@Kierkegaanks @TheBreadmonkey probably only 50-60% of facebook traffic originates from automated sources, but spending that much time with bots makes bots of the humans as well.
