@lightweight how reliable is this when everything is behind cloudflare etc? How reliable is it when every site uses external cdns or have adds injected from a 1000 different places?

@andreasio fair questions - not sure how reliable it is... but it's disappointing to see sites, e.g. run by the NZ gov't, using US-based Cloudflare infrastructure. I am, however, gratified by how many folks (like me) avoid using Cloudflare. I also use uMatrix which shows me in great detail where all of the 3rd party stuff comes from (I reject lots).
@lightweight @andreasio I have been hunting for a cloudflare alternative, just for advanced DNS stuff - it is a hard one to replace - their free plan is quite generous... But I am on the road to independence - from big tech, from US dominance, from concentration of power.. so interesting discussion. What do you use for your advanced DNS stuff?
@craiglambie42 @andreasio I'm not sure if I do 'advanced DNS stuff'... but I do host a *lot* of stuff - see https://webservices.magnificent.nz for the current tally (yes, the licence counter needs fixing 馃檭 ) - I do all my DNS hosting with a local 艑tautahi(Christchurch)-based registrar, https://metaname.net, whose owner I've known for years. Previously ran my own DNS (djbdns, believe it or not)... Not sure what more advanced DNS I'd need?
@lightweight wow, what a list!
That is a great manifest. I am impressed. I have a bunch of half finished projects or half started things, but that is great!
I am just purchased politicians.social in order to host my first mastodon instance for politicians to get off x - it will be au.politicians.social for Federal pollies here - then vic.au.politicans.social for Victorian (where I am I am) and others...
I would love to see nz.politicians.social for your ppl in NZ? Hosted in NZ...
@andreasio
@craiglambie42 @andreasio there are already discussions afoot...
@lightweight totally. The like of @leavex and @admin are working on this - and this is totally inspired by them.
1. Data sovereignty
2. Verified (using their MP email address)
3. Eventually to be taken over by the Electoral commission or similar institution is my goal with these servers
@lightweight yes - i am a fellow ublock addict (umatrix is also by gorhill if i remember correctly). And yeah... Idealistic people don't use cloudfare and akami and whats not. But most coorps do I think....
Personally i chose not to use a 3rd party to analyse my traffic. But I have actually contemplated doing something locally. Like a retroactive how many percent of my traffic stems from bad country. I believe pi hole could export every dns request. Maybe network monitor in FF can too?
@andreasio not sure. For monitoring my own sites, I've adopted Umami (self-hosted)... but that might be quite what you mean...
